Light Adjustable Lens

The FIRST Post-Cataract Surgery Adjustable Lens

Ennen Eye Center is the first practice in the region to offer the world’s FIRST post-cataract surgery adjustable lens to decrease your dependence on glasses and contacts. The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL/LAL+) is the only adjustable Intraocular Lens (IOL) that allows you to customize your results AFTER cataract surgery for the vision YOU want! Now you can experience your vision, and then refine it. So your vision will truly be yours.

Why Choose the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL/LAL+)?

With this revolutionary technology, you will have the unique opportunity to adjust and preview your vision until it meets your personal lifestyle needs and requirements. This optimization is performed by your doctor after lens implantation through a series of painless in-office UV light treatment procedures that only take a few minutes. This is where the post-cataract surgery experience is truly different for Light Adjustable Lens+ patients!

How the Light Adjustable Lens Works

This unique lens is made of a special material that is photosensitive and changes the power and shape of the implanted lens when treated with ultraviolet (UV) light. The UV light treatment is performed by your doctor after your surgery with the RxSight ® Light Delivery Device (LDD).

We will provide you with special UV protective glasses that you will wear after your surgery during all waking hours as your eyes heal.

You will need 3–5 total light treatments, while continuing to wear the protective glasses.

Once your optimal vision is achieved, the lens power is permanently locked in to prevent further changes.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will be provided post-operative instructions and the UV-blocking glasses after your treatment.  As with any cataract or refractive lens exchange procedure, it will take time for the eyes to heal.  While your doctor selected the lens that was estimated to give you the best possible vision, you and your doctor will work together in the weeks following your surgery to optimize your vision.  Please pay close attention to your vision so that you are accurately able to discuss your preferences with your doctor.

The UV-blocking glasses should be worn at all times, typically for about 4-5 weeks, depending on the number of light treatments you need after your surgery. Your doctor will let you know when you no longer need to wear the UV-blocking lenses. It is important that you do not substitute the UV-blocking glasses with your regular sunglasses, as the UV-blocking glasses have a special protective coating that no other glasses have.

Typically, between 1 – 3 light treatments are needed to achieve optimal vision, but this varies from patient to patient.

Numbing drops are used to keep you comfortable during the light treatments. You may experience mild pressure or discomfort, or sensitivity to the bright light, but the light treatments should not be painful.

Immediately following each treatment, your vision may be blurry due to the gel used during the application of the light treatment. This should resolve quickly. It usually takes about 24 hours after each light treatment to notice an improvement in your vision.
